    erm... you need to measure the bottom bracket shell width, its either 68 or 73mm and the axle width, and i wouldnt even bother with square taper personally, get a whole replacement crankset including the bb, dont go for a 3 piece though as thats what you already have, its meaty and heavy! maybe go for an isis bb with some tough alloy arms? what kind of riding do you do?

    vaguely, i remember the problem with it feeling heavy etc... having the back wheel all the way in and the chain shortened must mean you need a tensioner no?
    as for cranks, what is it got at the moment? are they cro-mo or alloy?
