  as a serious answer to full sus or hardtail - see if you can borrow one for a test ride or try one at a demo day, then you can feel the differences yourself. for xc/trails the main benefits are that your more stable going over rough stuff, i find generally your arms have an easier time so you don't get tired as quickly, and the sus does take the edge of any jumps or drops, oh and you can pump the trail better. hope that helps
