Baged. I don't think it's as simple as you say; just removing a crank arm is difficult for someone who doesn't know what they're doing, and in any case, there's even more to it than you describe.
santacruz, if you're also planning on increasing the size of your (currently) middle ring - to compensate for the loss of higher gears - you may also need to get a larger inner ring too. It's difficult to explain, but a larger middle ring means there's less clearance fo the chain. If you're using the small ring on the front it may rub against the middle ring when you're also using the smaller end of the rear cassette.
And, you also need to think about chainring bolts as most bashrings require longer ones that those used for a 3 ring set-up.
Also, if you really want to go for it, you might also consider removing the bottom bracket and swopping a spacer over from the non-drive side to the drive side. Not having a large chain ring to worry about means you're able to shift the chainline out slightly - improving the ability to run small/small gears.
Personally I like the sleek aluminimum bashguards, like the new
Raceface but chunky plastic ones are more robust. Doing something like this yourself can be very rewarding, but If you're not 100% confident I would reccommend getting your local bike shop to do it for you. Good luck with it.
