Need some friendly advice

Rite ill keep this short as possible, Basically im looking for a bike next month, not a big budget say about £500, second hand is fine with me as i know ill get better better value for money, I live in the forest of dean so there is a mixture of trials etc around. Basically im stuck with what sort of bike i should be looking for, ill be wanting to ride everything, the down hill tracks and even some of the bike trails, Can anyone reccommend any bike that would be suitable for this sort of thing. Im confused to wethere i need an xc bike or a free ride etc as i know fod has some pretty steep tracks. Ideally id like a full suss, would a stinky be any good?
Any help and ideas would be very much apriciated.

it won't be the quickest on the ups but it will pedall up em. and is very capable on the downs.

What does your downhill involve? Riding down hills, or DH as in 10 feet drops and large jumps etc?

Well cant really comment on that as i havent road the downhill tracks in the fod, im dont think they are that extreme. And thanks so far all, ive looked on pink bike and not seen any of these yet.

You really need to work out what terrain you will be riding, as the differences in types of bikes is marked.

well the trails around here are mostly gravel tracks but the center is all woodland.

If the riding is only going to invlove some minor jumps and drops, ie a couple of feet at most, your average 'trail' bike will suffice. This is a great bike for the money:

A Stinky would certainly be a good bike for the money and would certainly withstand everything you could ever want to throw at it in the FOD, or most other places for that matter. It's a bit on the heavy side for longer XC rides that involve too much climbing.
My advice is to decide how important the climbing ability is and make your decision around that. If you want to be able to do long XC rides and occasional DH/freeriding, then go for a shorter travel bike, which'll generally be lighter.......if you want to do more DH/freeriding but want a bike that's capable of being ridden all day, then go for a Stinky.
A good middle ground is an adjustable travel full-susser.

I went into Decathlon the other week,they do a carbon Rockrider xt/xtr bike for £1700,
seemed like a steal,although i wouldn't ride it !

my stinky is the only bike i have and i ride it everywhere! yes its harder to ride on xc cause its heavier but that just means it keeps me fitter, a bike is a bike is a bike and why when anyone says they want a second hand bike do people put up links to £1000+ bikes? like money is no object and we all have thousands to spend, do they understand what second hand means?
